Edinburgh Infectious Diseases is the network of infectious disease researchers and clinicians in Edinburgh.

Aims of Edinburgh Infectious Diseases

Represent the strengths of infectious disease science in Edinburgh through our symposia, workshops, outreach activity and internet profile;

Maintain a strategic overview of infectious disease research in Edinburgh, to maximise synergy between established activities and promote new avenues for investigation;

Foster infectious disease teaching and training at all levels within the University, including the development of new postgraduate initiatives.

Over 200 research groups focussing on infectious diseases.

The network connects over 900 Scientists in 200 research groups, actively working in infectious disease research across the city of Edinburgh, addressing topics as diverse as biomarkers of viral infection, delivery of healthcare in unstable settings, antimicrobial resistance, neglected tropical diseases and evolution of viral pandemics. 

Our members

Our members come from an array of different backgrounds including basic, human clinical and veterinary scientists, hospital consultants and social scientists.  

The network is run from the University of Edinburgh, but includes other Edinburgh organisations such as Moredun Research Institute, NHS Lothian, in addition to Heriot Watt, Edinburgh Napier and Queen Margaret Universities.

Edinburgh Infectious Diseases researchers have established an array of international collaborations, including numerous countries in the developing world in order to combat diseases of global health concern.

Activities

Our activities are aimed at building a more a vibrant and integrated community of infectious diseases researchers that actively engages in the development of multidisciplinary collaborations.  The Network links members via e-communications, topic-focused workshops, and larger symposia, generating an environment where new partnerships can be forged, developed and supported.

Facilities

Researchers Edinburgh have access to world class laboratory and clinical facilities, including animal and human imaging suites, category three large animal containment facilities, high throughput sequencing facilities and super-computer infrastructure, which further enhance the capacity for world class research and impact.
