We are delighted to announce that participants can now register for the 9th Annual Edinburgh Infectious Diseases Symposium on 10 and 11 November 2020. Image Although we were very disappointed to have to cancel our plans to hold this year's symposium back in June, we have now decided to move the event online, so that we can continue to celebrate the fantastic breadth and depth of infectious disease research happening across our network. As in previous years we will be presenting a showcase of the world-class infectious disease research in Edinburgh, and very much hope that you will be able to join us. We will be using the Collaborate platform to deliver the event, which will allow the talks and poster sessions to be interactive. To ease screen-strain, we have split the event over two days – the afternoon of Tuesday 10 November and the morning of Wednesday 11 November 2020 – and have an excellent programme of talks and poster presentations each day. Please register on EventbriteNews just in - 29 October 2020We are delighted that we will be hearing from 10 excellent Early Career Researchers in the lightening talk sessions!Rose Blake – The Roslin InstituteStephanie Brien – R(D)SVS and the Roslin InstituteAntonia Chalka – The Roslin InstituteSamantha Griffiths – Infection MedicineElizabeth Hughes – School of Biological SciencesSusana Keane – The Roslin InstituteTessa Nash – The Roslin InstituteStanley Otoboh – Institute of Immunology and Infection Research, School of Biological SciencesNia Verdon – Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems / Population Dynamics, School of Physics and AstronomyIona Walker – Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology / Social AnthropologyProvisional programmeTuesday 10 November13:00: Ross Fitzgerald (Director Edinburgh Infectious Diseases) – Welcome and introduction13:10: Keith Matthews (School of Biological Sciences) – Quorum sensing and competition in African trypanosomes13:30: Kate Templeton (Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) – Coronavirus - TBC13:50: Jim Kaufman (School of Biological Sciences) – Generalists and specialists: more on a new way of thinking about MHC and disease14:10: LEG STRETCH14:20: ECR Lightening talks 114:40: Helen Alexander (School of Biological Sciences) – Evolution to the rescue: understanding pathogen survival in challenging environments15:00: Steve Jenkins (Centre for Inflammation Research) – The life and times of a macrophage: only the good die young?15:20: POSTER SESSION 116:00: Ker Memorial Lecture: Ron Fouchier (Erasmus MC, Rotterdam) – Emergence of respiratory viruses in humans, with focus on influenzaWednesday 11 November09:30: Ker Prize Winner: You(Leo) Li (Usher Institute) – Global seasonality of respiratory viruses and the association between viral acute respiratory infection and subsequent pneumococcal disease09:50: ECR Lightening talks 210:10: Till Bachmann (Infection Medicine) – Diagnostics for Antimicrobial Resistance10:30: Nikki Lynskey (Roslin Institute) – Title TBC10:50: Clare Hamilton (Moredun Research Institute) – Towards the characterisation of virulence of Toxoplasma gondii11:10: LEG STRETCH11:20: POSTER SESSION 212:00: Lukas Engelmann (School of Social and Political Science) – Covid-19 and the Case for a new History of Epidemiology12:20: Tim Connelley (Roslin Institute ) – Using cattle immunogenetics and associated tools to enhance vaccine development12:40: Helen Stagg (Usher Institute) – Adherence to treatment: what does this mean for infectious disease control?13:00: Ross Fitzgerald (Director Edinburgh Infectious Diseases) – CLOSEFurther informationWe will be updating the programme and schedule for the day on the Symposium website, so please check for further information.9th Annual Edinburgh Infectious Diseases Symposium Publication date 07 Oct, 2020
