Christopher Amandu is the Fleming Fund AMR Human Health Laboratory fellow, and is based at the Arua Regional Referral Hospital, where he is the head of the microbiology labs. As part of activities during World Antibiotic Awareness Week in November 2021, Christopher visited the Arua Institute of Health Sciences Institute to help provide training to students about the causes and implications of AMR, and how they can contribute to solutions that tackle these challenges. The Institute is a private medical training institution in the Arua district of Uganda. It was established in September 2007 and has trained more than 1000 health professionals working in private and public health facilities across Uganda, and internationally. Need for more education about AMR During the training sessions with staff and students at the Institute, Christopher found that there was little knowledge about the burden of AMR in Uganda, and other low-income countries, and that the students received little or no training about AMR and its control in their curriculum. However, there was a very enthusiastic response to the training from participants at the sessions, with students very willing to act as advocates and ambassadors for AMR awareness. The students have now requested further training on the burden of AMR and its mitigation, and how they might best take the message to the communities which they serve. I would like to thank the University of Edinburgh for the encouragement, knowledge and moral support during the awareness week.
