Find out about how the One Health Models of Disease 4-year PhD programme is structured and what you will do during each year of your studies. Structure of the Training Image Training structure over the four years of the One Health Models of Disease PhD programme. Year 1 In their first year, students undertake a bespoke taught course including the principles of the One Health approach and its key social and ethical dimensions. All students (including those with a social science background) will participate in a practical course in CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, cell transfection, gene mutagenesis etc., and a taught module on comparative animal models and in vivo skills. The taught course also includes specific sessions on the bioethics, societal aspects and implications of animal research and application of genomic technologies in health. Year 1 will also include two rotation research projects including at least one bioscience project and the option of one social science/bioethics project. Years 2 – 4 At the end of the first year, students select the area in which they wish to work for their PhD project, and in collaboration with their chosen supervisor, will develop their programme of research. Projects can involve development or application of model systems including cellular, tissue, whole animal or in silico. PhD projects in social science or bioethics are offered at Centre for Biomedicine Self and Society to interested students with the appropriate background. Such projects may address the ethical and regulatory dimensions of developing novel whole animal models, and the ways in which political and public concerns shape research and policy in the area of animal genome editing. Supported transition to onward careers There are additional funds available within the programme that can support students to make the transition into the next stage of their career. An important component of the programme will be the opportunity for students to undertake internships with an academic, industrial, or policy organisation partner of their choice to promote onward career progression. These internships will normally be of 3-months duration but will be flexible in light of potential caring or other personal commitments.
