Edinburgh researchers showcase AMR research in the UK parliament

The event was hostess by the UKRI Cross-Council AMR Initiative and Stephen Metcalf, Chair of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and member of the Science and technology Committee (Commons).

How research is tackling the challenge of AMR

Attendees including researchers, policymakers, parliamentarians, industry figures and funders, heard from a leading panel of AMR researchers reflecting on the ‘One Health’ approach to tackling AMR. 

The panel discussed current research progress, outstanding research priorities and what is needed to enable research and innovation to deliver a step-change in tackling AMR.

Professor Mark Woolhouse from the Usher Institute of Population Health Sciences and Informatics, Dr Till Bachmann from the Division of Infection and Pathway Medicine, and Professor David Dockrell from the Centre for Inflammation Research all participated in the event.

Mark Woolhouse is the AMR Champion at the University of Edinburgh, working with colleagues to implement the Edinburgh AMR Strategy recently devised by the Edinburgh Infectious Diseases.

Edinburgh AMR Strategy

The strategy seeks to integrate the wide range of world-class research at the University across five main themes:

Global and Local Epidemiology of AMR (led by Mark Woolhouse)

Rapid Diagnostics for AMR (led by Dr Till Bachmann)

Basic mechanisms underpinning AMR (led by Prof Rosalind Allen)

Alternatives to Antibiotics (led by Prof David Dockrell)

AMR Governance and Stewardship (led by Prof Devi Sridhar)
