January 2025: As the world marks Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day, researchers from The University of Edinburgh are collaborating with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases to host a free, public exhibition. What are NTDs NTDs are a group of preventable diseases and infections that affect approximately 1.6 billion people around the world. These diseases do not kill as many people as other diseases, but they disable, disfigure, and rob people of their dignity, and a happy life. They stop children from going to school and mothers and fathers from going to work.Despite being treatable, these diseases are described as neglected, as they largely affect regions that have been typically overlooked, receive little global attention and face high costs for disease control and prevention efforts. The purpose of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is to raise the profile of NTDs, highlight the suffering they cause and garner support for their control, elimination or eradication. About the event To mark World NTD Day 2025, Professor Francisca Mutapi, deputy director of TIBA (Tacking Infections to Benefit Africa Partnership), the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases are organising a free exhibition. This public exhibition will feature portraits from humanitarian photographer, Marcus Perkins, and short films from award-winning filmmaker, Dr. Barry Gibb, bringing to the forefront real-life stories from Zimbabwe, to help inform policy and drive change. The exhibition 'Amplifying affected voices: neglected tropical diseases' will run from Friday 31 January to Tuesday 4 February at the following times:Friday 31 January 2025: 12:00-17:00Monday 3 February 2025: 14:00-18:00Tuesday 4 February 2025: 14:00-18:00 Neglected tropical diseases affect approximately 1.6 billion people, whose voices on lived experiences, challenges and triumphs need to be heard at levels to inform better health services and access. This exhibition is an opportunity for us to listen and respond to the NTD affected voices.
