June 2026: The British Veterinary Association (BVA) awarded Professor Tom McNeilly the prestigious accolade at their national ceremony. Tom was appointed Scientific Director of the Moredun Research Institute in October 2023. The established Advancement of Veterinary Science Award (Dalrymple-Champneys Cup and Medal) recognises a BVA member who has helped to advance veterinary science and medicine through research and knowledge sharing. They have authored outstanding scientific work or undertaken activities which advanced veterinary science and spread their knowledge. Their work has made a meaningful impact and helped to improve understanding of their chosen area of work. Innovative outputs on vaccinology The BVA have recognised Professor McNeilly for being one of very few UK-based veterinary scientists who delivers numerous, innovative outputs on vaccinology of multiple animal species.He joined Moredun in 2006 following the completion of his PhD at R(D)SVS, University of Edinburgh. He is a qualified veterinary surgeon, and prior to his PhD spent four years in mixed practice.His major interests are in mucosal immunology of ruminants, specifically host-pathogen interactions at mucosal surfaces, and how these may inform future disease control strategies.His world-leading research publication in “Vaccine” - successful immunization against a parasitic nematode by vaccination with recombinant proteins - represents many years of personal research, and he recently discovered new vaccine targets for louping ill virus that provide strong protection for sheep. I am truly honored to receive the Dalrymple-Champneys cup and medal. This list of past recipients is truly awe-inspiring, and I am very grateful to BVA and the selection committee for giving me such a prestigious award. As with many things in life, this has been a real team effort, and my veterinary career has been supported by many others. Firstly, the mentors who have provided me such excellent guidance and support throughout my career. Secondly, the colleagues and collaborators who have made my career so interesting and enjoyable. Finally, and most importantly, my family, for their unwavering support throughout my career, without which none of this would have been possible.
