Moredun opens upgraded High Security Unit

January 2026: Moredun Research Institute has opened its upgraded High Security Unit (HSU) following a major programme of refurbishment and sustainability works, strengthening Scotland’s role in protecting animal and public health.

The Moredun Research Institute is part of the Pentland Science Park at Easter Bush.
The upgraded high security facility was officially opened by MP for Midlothian, Kirsty McNeill, marking the completion of works designed to secure the long-term future of one of the UK’s high-containment research facilities.

Moredun’s HSU is one of only five such facilities in the UK and the only one in Scotland. It supports work on zoonotic pathogens; these are microorganisms that can cause disease in both humans and animals along with pathogens that have the capacity to cause animal disease outbreaks such as Bluetongue virus.

It was an absolute honour to open Moredun’s High Security Unit. Midlothian is a hub of scientific innovation and talent, and I am delighted that we are playing a central role in advancing the UK’s capability to protect animal and public health.

Responding to future disease outbreaks

The facility plays a key role in the UK’s ability to prepare for and respond to future disease outbreaks, which can have far-reaching consequences, with past events costing the UK economy billions of pounds.

The work carried out in the unit helps prevent and control diseases that threaten animal welfare, farming livelihoods and, in some cases, human health. Recent research carried out at the facility includes testing a vaccine to control Louping ill, a severe tick-borne disease in sheep that is increasing in prevalence as the climate changes, and supporting research into new treatments for COVID-19 using specialist animal models.

The Moredun High Security Unit is a key facility contributing to the UK’s ability to deal with animal disease outbreaks, including those that infect humans. Its location within Easter Bush, a centre of animal research excellence, further enhances its value to the nation.  We are immensely grateful for the funding from the UK government to complete vital upgrades to the facility and secure its future operation

Upgraded capability

The upgrade programme was funded by the UK Government Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and focused on key infrastructure improvements that will enhance animal welfare, staff safety and increase the energy efficiency of the unit.

The opening was attended by senior representatives from government, universities, and the livestock health research community, reflecting the national importance of the facility.
