The Wellcome Trust Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health programme combines scientific excellence with a commitment to improving the working environment and transition support for trainees.

We are part of an evolving community of practitioners who will develop and share practice to bring science and culture together, placing both firmly at the heart of what we do.

Strongly interdiscplinary PhD programme to PhD to train infectious disease researchers.

Students on this programme addressing global health challenges by understanding how infectious agents are spread, cause disease, interact with the immune and other body systems, or evolve to overcome our therapeutic interventions.

Students are strongly encouraged to combine research in a UK and developing country setting, or take interdisciplinary approaches that combine epidemiological, molecular and evolutionary mechanisms.

This basic science PhD programme is led by Professors Mark Woolhouse and Keith Matthews, from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.  It is also supported by the University-wide network of researchers interested in infectious diseases, Edinburgh Infectious Diseases.
