August 2025: Many congratulations to Professor Gary Entrican from the Roslin Institute who has received the Zoetis IUIS VIC Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award at the 14th International Veterinary Immunology Symposium. Gary has been recognised for his outstanding contributions to veterinary immunology by the Union of International Immunology Societies. Focus on infection biology Professor Entrican specialises in cellular immunology and the identification of immune correlates to underpin the development of vaccines and diagnostic tests to control infectious diseases of ruminant livestock. He graduated with a BSc Hons Degree in Immunology from The University of Glasgow where he also conducted his PhD in Immunology. After his PhD he took up a Post-Doctoral Research Position at The Moredun Research Institute (MRI) in Edinburgh investigating the immunological basis of pestivirus persistence in sheep. His interests in reproductive immunology led to studies on the pathogenesis of chlamydial abortion in sheep, with the aim of identifying immunological correlates of protection to underpin vaccine development. He remained at MRI until 2019 and is now Honorary Professor at the Roslin Institute within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at The University of Edinburgh.Gary was previously chair of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) from 2013-2019, and was the recipient of the American Association for Veterinary Immunology's Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award for 2021. It is a huge honour to receive the Zoetis IUIS VIC Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award. I have been very fortunate to have been inspired, mentored, encouraged and challenged by so many great scientists throughout my research career. To be recognised for promoting the same positive values and qualities to support the next generation of veterinary immunologists is truly humbling. Professor Gary Entrican Honorary Professor, the Roslin Institute Recognition of enrichment of future generations The recipient of the “Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award” is chosen by a selection committee from the international research community. The criteria includes stature as an internationally recognized authority and leader in the field of Veterinary Immunology, evidence of excellence and impact to the field, and contributions to veterinary immunology education, student training and mentorship of early career researchers/postdoctoral fellows that has supported the development of future generations of veterinary immunologists.Awarded every 3 years, previous recipients include American government scientific researcher Joan Lunney, previous director of the Baker Institute at Cornell University Professor Doug Antczak, and veterinary vaccinologist Professor Paul Wood of Monash University Australia.
